JMT Choreography FAQ: Your Questions Answered

We get a lot of questions from coaches and program directors before they reach out — and we love it. The more informed you are going into a choreography relationship, the better the outcome for your team. Below are the questions we hear most often, answered straight.

What services does JMT Choreography offer?

JMT offers five core services: All Star choreography, Prep routine choreography, School choreography, Pom and Lyrical choreography, and Skills Camps. We also offer Program Director Support — a consulting service for gym owners and directors who want help building season structures, lesson plans, team culture, and staff systems. Whether you need a single competition routine or full-season program support, we have a service built for it.

How far in advance should I book choreography?

As early as possible — ideally 2 to 4 months before you need the routine ready to compete. Peak season booking fills up fast, especially for fall and winter competition schedules. If you're planning for a Summit bid team or a high-stakes competition, earlier is always better. We recommend reaching out in late spring or early summer for fall season needs. That said, if you're in a pinch, contact us anyway — we'll always do our best to find a solution.

Do you travel to gyms or is choreography done remotely?

Both. Jason has traveled extensively across the US and internationally — including the United Kingdom — to work with programs on-site. We can also deliver choreography remotely through video and virtual sessions, depending on your needs and location. Many programs choose a hybrid approach: remote planning and music cutting, followed by an in-person choreography day to teach and clean the routine with athletes.

What levels and divisions do you work with?

All of them. We work with teams across every All Star level (Level 1 through Level 7), prep divisions, school programs, and pom and lyrical teams. Jason has coached and choreographed at every level from beginner youth teams through Senior Elite and Worlds-eligible squads. We also have team members with specific expertise in UK and international divisions through our partnership with Cheer Athletics England.

What is included in a choreography package?

Every choreography package is customized for your team, but typically includes: a consultation to understand your team's skill level, division, and goals; custom music cutting tailored to your routine's structure; full routine choreography including formations, transitions, stunts, tumbling, and dance sections; and a teaching session to walk athletes through the choreography. We build routines that are strategically designed around your specific score sheet — not generic templates.

Can you work with a team whose skill level is still developing?

Absolutely — and this is actually one of our strengths. One of the most common mistakes in choreography is building a routine that's beyond what a team can cleanly execute on competition day. We assess your athletes honestly and build routines at the right difficulty level so they can perform with confidence rather than survival mode. If your athletes need skill development before choreography makes sense, we'll tell you that too — and our Skills Camps exist exactly for that purpose.

What is a Skills Camp and who is it for?

A JMT Skills Camp is an intensive training session focused on technical development — tumbling progressions, stunt technique, jumps, body positions, and conditioning. It's designed for teams or individual athletes who want to break through plateaus, build consistency, or prepare for a more advanced competition season. Skills Camps are great for new programs building a foundation, established programs looking to level up, or athletes preparing for tryouts or individual skill certifications.

What is Program Director Support?

Program Director Support is a consulting service for gym owners and directors who want an experienced partner to help build or strengthen their program from the inside. This goes beyond choreography — it includes help with season planning, competition scheduling, lesson plan structures, coaching staff development, team culture, and athlete retention systems. Jason helped grow Intensity Elite Cheer from 30 athletes and 4 teams to over 180 athletes and 12 teams over 8 years. That same knowledge is available to your program.

Do you understand the USASF rules and score sheets?

Yes — deeply. Jason has worked as a judge in addition to coaching and choreographing, which means he understands scoring from both sides of the table. Every routine we build is designed with the specific score sheet in mind: difficulty sequencing, execution opportunities, performance scoring windows, and transition quality are all considered intentionally. We also stay current with USASF rule updates each season — including the new 2025-2026 Flex divisions, updated choreography content guidelines, and prop rule changes — so your routine is always competition-legal.

Do you work with international programs?

Yes. JMT has an active international presence, particularly in the United Kingdom through our work with Cheer Athletics UK and Intensity Elite Cheer. Our team includes Rachael Smart and Emily Overton, both based in England, who specialize in pom and lyrical choreography and have extensive experience with ICU, IASF, and UK-specific competition formats. If you're a UK or European program looking for choreography or program support, we have the right people for you.
